MUD HOUSE WINES varietal added to exclusive Rick Stein list

The newest superstar in the Mud House Wines stable is the 2007 Mud House Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, following its addition to the celebrated wine list of the restaurants in the Cornish fishing village of Padstow owned and run by premier British chef and food explorer Rick Stein.

Mr Stein, one of the world’s foremost seafood chefs, has spent the past 32 years building his Michelin-recognized Cornwall empire, which includes four restaurants and cafes, shops and accommodation, a patisserie and a delicatessen. He is the bestselling author of 11 cookery books and is well-known to New Zealanders through his TV series Mediterranean Escapes and French Odyssey.

The Mud House Sauvignon Blanc is a new inclusion on the wine list of his restaurants The Seafood Restaurant, St Petroc’s Bistro and Rick Stein’s Café.

Mr Stein’s Mud House Wines choice is the latest success for the winery, which received honours for three varietals at the 2007 Air New Zealand Wine Awards, and is also enjoying the international approbation of having a wine selected by a Master Sommelier for service onboard Delta Airlines, one of the world’s largest carriers.

Mud House Wines CEO Baden Ngan Kee said the special selection reflected the results of the winery’s implementation of a multi-regional strategy. “Clearly our success validates that strategy, along with the hard work and skill of the Mud House team. We’re thrilled about the listing – it means great exposure for Mud House Wines in the United Kingdom, which is an important market for any New Zealand winery, and the fact that a chef and food-lover of Rick Stein’s stature has chosen Mud House makes it all the more special.”

Consumption of 2007 Mud House Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc in the Cornwall restaurants is estimated to be around 500 cases per year.

“We have taken some important steps in the past year to develop our brand locally and internationally, and we are pleased that the quality of our wines is being recognized,” he said, pointing to the recent release of the winery’s three-tiered range, and the recruitment of several talented wine industry operators, including Chief Winemaker Ant Mackenzie, as examples of Mud House Wines’ growth.

The brand’s look has also undergone a makeover, recently unveiling a sharp new label design that Mr Ngan Kee says captures the zing and spice for which Mud House Wines is receiving accolades.

“We will continue to work to create even better wines to build on our success.”
