The Mud House Single Vineyard Home Block Waipara Valley Pinot Gris 2014 has been selected as No.1 and awarded five stars in this month’s Cuisine Magazine’s New Zealand Pinot Gris Tasting.
These top marks have cemented the fact that Mud House is exceptional at producing fabulous Pinot Gris, this one being a particularly gracious one, the perfect drop for Autumn.
Let’s not be fooled though, Accolade Group Winemaker Ben Glover reminds us.
Overcast and warm conditions for the ten days leading into picking this Pinot Gris from the Home Block Vineyard in Waipara Valley, and plenty of rain lingering around too, made life a little tricky.
“And because of that we are so ecstatic with the result,” said Ben.
This wine is the product of the strong viticultural team in Waipara Valley, with its deft handling and hand picking to make sure the cleanest fruit possible was chosen.
Once the fruit was in, Ben said it was a matter of keeping watch over the ‘fragile baby’ to ensure trueness of style.
“Even the fragile ones come through and we feel this is the most delicate, true, focussed, supple Pinot Gris we have produced from Waipara Valley for the Mud House Single Vineyard Range.”
The unique qualities of the Home Block Vineyard, with its gravelly soils and minerality, compliment this variety extrordinarily well.
First planted in 1995, these vines enhance the rich and spicy characters of this Pinot Gris.
Vineyard Manager Jean-Luc Dufour claims the Waipara Valley is a natural home for Pinot Gris and it is great to see these older grapevines reaching their full potential.
“2014 was a challenging season, and it was a great team effort to harvest the Pinot Gris at optimum condition for this fine wine,” he said.
Cuisine Magazine is synonymous with its highly respected, independent wine tastings, and the results over the years have formed an invaluable buying guide, allowing readers to trust the familiar ‘Recommended by Cuisine’ sticker.
Senior Wine Judge Jane Boyle noted Mud House has produced a Pinot Gris expressive of white flower, pear, ginger and fennel scents, which are refined and exotic, promising a mouthful of intrigue and balance.
“The fruit concentration is exemplary, ensuring the sweetness (the wine is medium-dry in style) never has the upper hand. It’s pristine and sophisticated,” noted Jane.
