Spiegelau bestows Trophy on Marlborough Pinot Gris

The 2013 Mud House Marlborough Pinot Gris was awarded the 2014 Liquorland Champion Pinot Gris trophy at the Spiegelau International Wine Competition awards dinner, held at Auckland’s prestigious Northern Club last Friday. Mud House also received gold medals for the 2013 Mud House Estate The Woolshed Vineyard Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and 2013 Mud House Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.Marlborough, traditionally known for producing award winning Sauvignon Blanc, is now developing a strong reputation in the Pinot Gris category.

Group Winemaker, Ben Glover, attributes the success of the three wines to the great resource of vineyards we have in Marlborough and believes the gold medals and trophy show the overall quality of fruit grown in the region.

“It is thrilling to get gongs for our fantastic Marlborough wines. For the Mud House team, the trophy is a great endorsement for all the hard work that goes into making this variety.” Ben went on to comment about the gold medal winning Sauvignon Blancs, “[they] have had some bottle age and are now drinking especially well. The true potential of our own Woolshed vineyard and the backbone it gives to both these stylistically different Sauvignon Blancs is evident.”

After a stunning 2013 Marlborough vintage, the decision was made to make a Pinot Gris sourced only from that region.  The award winning 2012 Mud House Pinot Gris was a South Island blend from the Waipara Valley and Marlborough; and now this blend is for export markets only.

The Spiegelau International Wine Competition was judged in Marlborough last month, with international guest judges, Ralph Kyte-Powell, Mike Bennie and Chair of Judges, Mike DeGaris; along with a number of New Zealand judges. Commenting on the results, Chief Judge, Mike DeGaris said, “This was a comprehensive show with a wide range of wines from a number of countries. The overall standard was very high so those awarded gold medals are truly outstanding.”
